The island on the lake, in detail

An islet of dark trees in the middle of a perfectly still lake, in a green-grey mist that erases the shores. The reflection is as sharp as the island: the waterline cuts the image into two almost symmetrical halves.

Where to hang it

A bedroom, a study, a waiting room. It is the quietest image in the catalogue: the one that slows a room down.

What it goes with

Verdigris, linen, raw wood, polished concrete. With “Misty forest” and “The misty valley”, it forms a photographic series to hang in a row.

Which size to choose

The 40 × 50 cm above a bed, the 50 × 70 cm on a bare wall. The symmetry of the reflection calls for hanging that is well centred and perfectly level: a tilted frame shows immediately.

Questions about this artwork

No: it is heavily desaturated, in greens and greys, but the colour is there, visible above all in the fir needles.

The catalogue’s two other mist images, at the same size and in the same frame. Three fog images in a row create a depth that none of them produces alone.

It is calm, not sad. If you fear it may feel cold, hang it near a warm material (wood, wool, terracotta) that will warm it up.
