The whale, in detail

A pale pink whale glides through a white barely tinged with blue, a small spout above its head, three bubbles rising. The watercolour is very diluted, almost a breath: the animal seems to swim through the air.

Where to hang it

A baby’s room, a children’s bathroom, a landing. The image breathes: lots of space, a single subject, no hard lines.

What it goes with

White, ecru, powder blue, wooden toys. In the children’s trio, it is the middle piece: softer than the bear, calmer than the balloons.

Which size to choose

The 30 × 40 cm is the right starting point; the 40 × 50 cm if the wall is bare and light, because the very pale background needs a little surface to exist.

Questions about this artwork

That is its nature: it whispers. On a white wall, choose a wood or black frame to mark its edge; on a coloured wall, it becomes a bright window.

Powder pink avoids the expected blue and lets the artwork work in a bedroom as well as a bathroom. It is a nursery-rhyme whale, not a documentary.

That is one of its intended uses: on canvas, with the first name and the date engraved below the whale, it replaces the traditional birth poster with its figures.
