Pencil, watercolor, oil portrait: which technique to choose?

The technique changes everything—less the subject than what you feel when you look at it. Here are the three styles we offer, and who each is best suited for.

Watercolor: the softest

The watercolor portrait is the most frequent choice, and the easiest to live with daily. The contours remain flexible, colors blend, light passes through the material. It forgives a lot: a slightly imperfect photo reads very well in watercolor, whereas a sharper technique would have emphasized its flaws.

Oil painting: the most solemn

Like an old master painting: thick material, deep background, sculpted light. An oil family portrait painting doesn't go unnoticed—it's a piece that holds its own on a living room wall and invites comment. We also offer a chiaroscuro variant, inspired by the Renaissance, with a dark background and light coming from one side.

Best for uncluttered walls: this technique requires distance to be fully appreciated.

Pencil and charcoal: the most understated

A drawn portrait in graphite and charcoal, without color. It's the most graphic of the three, and the most timeless: it matches any interior, clashes with no palette, and ages very well. We also offer a continuous line drawing, even more refined, for those who appreciate minimalism.

That's our policy: the preview is free and arrives in minutes. You upload your photos to our creation studio, choose a technique, and see the result before paying anything. If the resemblance doesn't convince you, we'll redo it—and if nothing pleases you, you leave without owing anything.

Family portrait on canvas or framed?

Once the artwork is validated, the medium remains. It's more a question of the room than of taste.

The canvas stretched on a frame has neither glass nor molding: it blends into the wall, reflects no light, and remains light—making it a good choice for a child's bedroom or a wall you don't want to drill into deeply. It's also our entry-level option, starting from €34.90.

The framed painting in real wood, with its protective plate, on the other hand, creates a finished object that looks like a masterpiece. On a living room wall or in an entryway, it's the one that makes an impression. We offer nine finishes—from light oak to matte black, including aluminum and float frame.

A simple guide for the format: above a sofa or a sideboard, choose a 50 x 70 cm. On a narrow wall or a shelf, a 30 x 40 cm is sufficient. Below that, the faces of a large family become difficult to distinguish.

"I just want to turn my photo into a watercolor, for free"

Many people come here with this idea, and it deserves an honest answer rather than a sales pitch.

Dozens of free tools apply a watercolor or pencil effect to a photo with one click. They do exactly what they promise—and that's perfect for a wallpaper, a greeting card, a publication. If that's what you're looking for, don't pay anything: these tools are sufficient.

However, they fall short on three things, and these are precisely what matter when the image ends up printed large:

They don't bring anyone together. A filter processes one photo. It doesn't know how to take four separate photos and make them into a coherent group, with the same light on all faces.

They don't redraw; they dress up. An effect remains dependent on the original photo—its framing, its background, its lighting. Enlarged to 50 x 70 cm, this becomes obvious: you recognize a doctored photo, not a work of art.

They are not made for printing. The resolution of an online effect is that of the screen. A fine art print requires much more detail, otherwise the details turn to mush.

The same observation applies to another question we are often asked: how to transfer a photo onto a canvas yourself. It can be done, with medium and patience, and the result has a genuine artisanal charm. But you will get a photo on canvas, not a drawn portrait—two different objects, for two different desires.

The personalized couple portrait follows exactly the same mechanism, for two. Two photos, one artwork, the technique of your choice. It's an anniversary, wedding, or Valentine's Day gift that has the advantage of being unlike any other.

What photos should I send for a successful result?

This accounts for 80% of the final quality, and it doesn't require a professional camera— a recent phone is more than enough.

A clear and visible face, preferably head-on, without sunglasses or a cap that obscures the eyes.

Soft light: near a window rather than in direct sunlight, which creates deep shadows under the eyes.

One photo per person when you're bringing several loved ones together—each face is treated separately before being placed in the scene.

The largest possible photo. Avoid screenshots and images re-sent via messaging, which lose a lot of detail in the process.

And what if the only photo you have of a loved one is old, damaged, or yellowed? This is not an obstacle: we restore it first, then we work on it. This is very often the case for grandparents and deceased loved ones.

Bringing someone who is no longer with us into the portrait

This is the most delicate and most frequent request we receive. A family wants a portrait that includes a parent, a sibling, or a child who has passed away—so they can have their place on the living room wall, with the others.

The preview is free and ready in a few minutes. Once your artwork is approved and ordered, allow 4 to 7 working days in total: one to two days for production, then three to five days for tracked delivery. Prices start at €34.90 for canvas and €73 for framed art, depending on the size and finish.
